TRADITION THAT LASTS

1929

Company was founded

• Our company was originally established under the name of SILA at the address: Ružić Street 17

• After World War I on the right bank of the River Rječina there was a developed industry with a long tradition. On Sušak side of the River Rječina river there was no important industry except for Paper mill and the shipyard at Kraljevica. Simultaneously with the expansion of the port of Sušak a need for a range of ship- and ship equipment repair activities was emerging. Until then all the repairs had been carried out either in Rijeka with great difficulty due to a border or in Zagreb which is almost 200 km away from Sušak.

• These were the primary prerequisites which initiated the idea of establishing marine mechanical workshop which soon became known under the name of VULKAN.
Several wealthy people from Sušak realized their intention to establish a craft workshop for repairing ship deck equipment as well as other industrial appliances. They started in a tiny and inadequate space in the industrial part of Sušak in Ružić Street.

• The company „VULKAN – marine mechanical workshop and foundry“ was registered on February 28, 1933 at the Commercial Register of the District Court at Sušak. The owner was Metod Tomljenović, a shipmaster from Sušak. The accountant was Ivan Tomljenović from Sušak (he was probably the owner’s brother). The two of them were registered as company authorized officers.

• Soon after establishing VULKAN started providing maintenance services and repairs of ships and ship equipment as well as various production facilities. Services were provided for Jadranska plovidba Sušak, shipowners: Matković from Split, Borović from Sušak, Tripković from Trieste, Atlantska plovidba Sušak, factories of soap, paper and plywood from Sušak and for many others.
